Rescue teams continue to search for survivors after two powerful earthquakes struck near Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, causing widespread structural damage and forcing residents to flee their homes.

The second earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 7.5, is considered one of the strongest to impact the country in decades. The seismic events occurred at approximately 6:04 p.m. local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first tremor registered at magnitude 7.2 and originated in Yaracuy state, west of Caracas, at a depth of around 22 kilometres. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake followed at a shallower depth.

Although the epicentres were located outside Caracas, the capital city experienced intense shaking. Tremors were also felt across neighbouring Colombia, including in Bogotá.

The earthquakes struck during national celebrations marking the Battle of Carabobo, a significant milestone in Venezuela’s independence history.

Rescue Operations Underway

Emergency responders were rapidly deployed to affected regions as authorities began assessing the damage and searching for individuals trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Images circulating on social media show destroyed buildings, debris-strewn streets, and rescue personnel working tirelessly through the rubble. Some footage appears to capture individuals trapped inside damaged buildings, calling out for help.

In the municipality of Chacao, officials reported that at least two buildings collapsed. Several people have already been rescued, while hundreds of emergency workers remain engaged in ongoing search operations.

Authorities have urged residents to evacuate damaged buildings due to concerns over structural instability and the risk of gas leaks.

Additionally, reports have emerged of internet disruptions and temporary interruptions to fuel supplies in parts of Caracas.

Casualty Figures Still Uncertain

As of now, officials have not released an official death toll. While there are indications that casualties may have occurred, emergency teams are still working to determine the full extent of injuries and fatalities.

The U.S. Geological Survey noted that many structures in the affected region could be particularly vulnerable to seismic activity due to local construction practices. Preliminary impact models suggest the potential for significant damage and casualties, although these estimates remain unofficial and subject to confirmation.

International Support Considered

Authorities have indicated that international assistance may be requested as rescue and recovery efforts continue. However, details regarding potential foreign aid have not yet been finalised.

Further updates are expected as authorities continue their assessments and rescue operations progress.
