Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russia early Sunday, killing at least six people, Russian regional officials said, in one of the biggest air strikes carried out by Kyiv since the full-scale war began.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences had destroyed or intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said nearly 600 drones were detected flying toward the Russian capital, with one-third shot down in the Moscow region. The figures could not be independently confirmed.
An 83-year-old man was killed when a drone hit a private house in Podolsk in the Moscow region, regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said. Separately, a strike hit a warehouse of Russian online retailer Wildberries in the region. The Russian media showed images of thick smoke billowing from the site.
Five other people died in Russia’s southwestern Rostov region, Gov. Yury Slyusar said. Officials said the attack involved more than 150 drones, which damaged homes and a railway station and sparked a forest fire in that region.
The strikes are part of Ukraine’s growing campaign of long-range attacks on targets inside Russia. Kyiv has ramped up drone and missile strikes on Russian military, industrial, energy and logistics infrastructure.
The attack came after another large-scale long-range attack by Ukraine on industrial sites in Russia’s Samara region a day earlier. Russian authorities said the attack caused limited localised damage, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian-made missiles struck strategic targets.

Russia also attacked across Ukraine overnight with missiles and drones.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Russian strike on Kryvyi Rih killed two people and wounded 14 others. He said there was another death in the city of Sumy.
Kyiv: Fires and injuries from Russian attacks. Ukrainian officials said the attacks hit multiple areas of the capital and the Kyiv region around it. As emergency crews continued responding to the attacks, reports of how many were injured varied.
Zelenskyy accused Russia of launching ballistic missiles at civilian infrastructure and of a fresh wave of drone attacks.
The recent attacks underscore the continued escalation of long-range strikes more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
