Russian drone attack on Ukraine damages oil refinery, kills 2 in Moscow region

Russian officials said a Ukrainian drone strike overnight on Moscow and the surrounding region killed two people and injured six others.

Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyev said that air defenses shot down 249 drones over the region. He said several residential buildings and a warehouse had caught fire.

A 44-year-old woman was killed when a drone struck a three-story residential building in Sofyino, Vorobyev said. Five other people, including two children, suffered injuries.

A drone struck a private home in the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, killing an elderly man, the governor said.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin: Separately, Sobyanin said drones had reached the capital and damaged a facility at an oil refinery. He also said a building near one of the boulevards in Moscow was struck.

Russian authorities gave varying numbers for drones intercepted or heading toward Moscow and the wider region. Sobyanin said that 450 drones were aimed at Moscow, while an earlier statement attributed to him said that 152 drones were shot down near the capital. Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had shot down more than 1,600 drones in its controlled territory since Saturday.

The reported strikes disrupted air traffic. Sheremetyevo airport introduced temporary restrictions, and Vnukovo stopped arrivals and departures. The restrictions were later lifted, but passengers were warned delays could continue.

Videos posted on social media showed explosions above the Moscow region and a warehouse on fire. The video has not been independently verified.

Ukraine has not confirmed the reported attack.

The strikes came on the last day of Russia's parliamentary elections. Russian officials say the drone attacks were intended to disrupt voting, but the claim has not been independently verified.

Ukraine: Deadly Russian Attacks Reported

Separately, Ukrainian officials reported deaths in Russian attacks on Saturday.

Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko said that a mother and her two young children died in the city of Fastiv. Several private homes were also damaged.

Regional official Oleh Hryhorov said a Russian drone hit a car in the Sumy region, killing four people.

The numbers in the source need to be sorted out: the introduction says eight people, including three children, were killed in the Kyiv and Sumy regions, but the individual incidents described in the article add up to seven deaths. The current report on the same incident puts the reported total at seven, two of whom are children.

The new strikes follow persistent Russian and Ukrainian attacks on infrastructure such as energy and transport facilities.

The attacks also came days after US President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed not to strike energy infrastructure. That notwithstanding, attacks on energy facilities have persisted.

On Friday, Trump signed into law the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The law grants the president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods from major purchasers of Russian oil or natural gas; it does not automatically impose those tariffs.
