At least 15 people, including 11 civilians and four security personnel, have been killed following violent clashes in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (AJK). The unrest was sparked by a coalition of activist groups protesting against the reservation of legislative seats for refugees from Indian-controlled Kashmir who live in other parts of Pakistan. Local residents argue that this "refugee quota" deprives them of nearly a quarter of their representation in the local assembly.

Despite a ban on the leading protest group and the arrest of several leaders, thousands of demonstrators are currently marching toward the regional capital, Muzaffarabad. Authorities have responded with a heavy security presence, tear gas, and stay-at-home orders broadcasted from local mosques. The situation is further complicated by a tragic military helicopter crash in the region earlier this week, which killed all 22 on board due to technical failure.
