The search produces almost nothing for hours.

Researchers slowly drive through Dryandra Woodland in Western Australia, scanning logs, scrub and roadside vegetation for one of the country’s most elusive mammals – the numbat.

The small, striped marsupial was once found across much of southern Australia. Today, only a fraction of that habitat remains, and the species exists in a few locations.

There is, however, an important difference between the numbat's past and its present.

The species has started to recover after decades of predator control, captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. In July, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) moved the numbat from Endangered to Near Threatened on its Red List.

The change is a major conservation milestone. But it is not a statement of safety for the species.

The IUCN estimates that only 2,000 to 3,000 numbats remain today. The species occupies only about 0.04% of its historical range, and feral cats and red foxes continue to be major threats.

The numbat is still listed as Endangered under national environmental law in Australia.

That distinction is important because the numbat’s recovery is taking place against a far larger biodiversity crisis.

A country in trouble

Australia is unique for its high concentration of species that exist nowhere else. But its wildlife has also suffered some of the world’s worst recent losses of mammals.

The nation’s threatened species lists have continued to grow. Australia’s 2021 State of the Environment assessment listed more than 100 species as extinct or extinct in the wild under national and related assessments, while researchers have argued that the official tally fails to capture every species believed to have vanished since European settlement.

The pressures are familiar. These pressures include habitat destruction, invasive predators, disease, a changing climate, and increasingly fragmented ecosystems.

Feral cats and foxes have been particularly destructive to Australia’s small native mammals. That predator management has been key to the numbat’s recovery.

In Dryandra, conservation teams monitor the population during the spring period when young animals start to emerge from their burrows. Sightings are logged and used to estimate population density and monitor changes over time.

It can be painstaking work.

Researchers may drive slowly along bush tracks for hours before spotting a single animal.

Finally, the wait pays off on a survey.

A numbat approaches a hollow log. Then another. Soon there are several of them, including young animals.

For the people who have watched the species for decades, such sightings are proof that prolonged conservation can work.

From around 300 to thousands

The numbat declined sharply.

In the late 1970s research estimated that as few as 300 remained. The introduction and spread of feral cats and red foxes were major drivers of population collapses across southern Australia.

Conservation programmes since then have combined predator control, predator-proof fencing, captive breeding and translocation.

Perth Zoo has run a breed-for-release programme for more than 30 years. The zoo says it has released 325 zoo-born numbats into wild habitats in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales since the programme began in 1993.

The IUCN says conservation efforts have helped create at least five more self-sustaining populations.

The result is a population estimated at 2,000-3,000 animals.

That recovery is one of the most obvious illustrations of what long-term conservation can do. But the species remains vulnerable due to the persistence of so little of its original range and the widespread presence of its main predators.

The woylie, or brush-tailed bettong, is a warning. Reduced protection and monitoring can unravel conservation successes.

Australia’s broader extinction crisis

The numbat is just a small part of a much broader story.

Since European settlement, Australia has had an unusually high number of mammal extinctions. The country’s wildlife also faces habitat clearing, invasive species, fire, disease and climate-related pressures.

The scale of the challenge was demonstrated by the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires. A WWF-commissioned study estimated that the fires killed or displaced nearly three billion animals. The figure was an approximation of the animals affected by the fires, not an exact number of animals killed.

Others are more slowly pressured.

Some populations have been isolated in ever smaller areas of habitat. Others are losing sources of food and breeding grounds. Invasive species can add to these pressures by preying on native animals or by competing with them for resources.

Another factor is disease. The chytrid fungus, for example, has had a devastating impact on Australia's amphibians, while disease has also played a part in the declines of some other native species.

Climate change adds another layer of risk from heat extremes, changing ecosystems and intensifying some weather-related threats.

The loss of biodiversity also has cultural impacts for First Nations communities who have relationships with species and Country that go back generations.

A test for conservation policy

Australia's federal government has vowed stronger environmental protection.

In November 2025, the Albanese government enacted sweeping changes to Australia’s national environmental laws. The reforms are being phased in. Further provisions came into force in February 2026, while the new National Environmental Protection Agency was formally established on July 1, 2026.

National Environmental Standards are also being developed to provide greater clarity on the rules that protect matters of national environmental significance.

That means a lot has changed in the policy landscape since the legislation was passed.

The main question now is how well the new system will work in practice.

The government says the reforms are aimed at strengthening environmental protection while making decision-making more transparent and efficient. Environmental groups and scientists, however, keep arguing that the record of species decline in Australia shows the need for stronger implementation, adequate funding and effective enforcement.

It’s not just about new laws.

A lot of the conservation work in Australia relies on ongoing funding, scientific monitoring, land management and collaboration between federal, state and local governments, Indigenous communities, researchers and volunteers.

The numbat’s recovery shows what those efforts can do.

But it also demonstrates how quickly gains could be lost.

A recovery, not an end

The sighting in Dryandra turns out to be more than a successful day in the field.

After hours of searching, the researchers saw eight numbats, including young animals.

The sight of multiple animals in the same woodland is encouraging for a species that had fallen to only a few hundred individuals.

But conservation scientists warn against interpreting the IUCN's change in status as the end of the recovery effort.

The current assessment says management remains key. The numbat still only covers a tiny part of its former distribution, and feral cats and foxes still represent a serious risk.

That might be the most useful lesson from the numbat.

Not all extinctions are foregone conclusions. But recovery does not happen by accident, and it does not necessarily last.

The challenge now for Australia’s threatened wildlife is to turn isolated conservation successes into lasting population recovery – before more species are lost altogether.
